1.  Tropical Depression Bonnie is moving west approaching the Bahamas.  Cold air ahead is evidenced by a
large cold low hovering northwest of Bonnie.

INSET-One day later, a cold low has formed in advance of Bonnie's path.

Bonnie is moving into the Gulf of Mexico from the Florida Peninsula.  The cold low, seen here spinning south of
Louisiana, has been escorting and suppressing development of Bonnie for two days.  Two days later, Bonnie
made landfall in Mississippi as a remnant low.  Satellite imagery at that time can be seen in the final panel of
Appendix A1.

EARTH’S MAGIC THERMOSTATS

President Obama warned:

"The issue of climate change is one that we ignore at our own peril.  ...what we can be
scientifically certain of is that our continued use of fossil fuels is pushing us to a point of no
return.  And unless we free ourselves from a dependence on these fossil-fuels and chart a
new course on energy in this country, we are condemning future generations to global
catastrophe."

President Obama's words are fear mongering nonsense to scare Americans into approving: his cap-
and-trade system for which he promises a massive increase in the cost of living for all Americans;
draconian cuts in carbon emissions, certain to cripple the economy; and global governance of U.S.
energy and related industries under the United Nations.  His strong support for these anti-American
initiatives has been made clear in speeches and in actions at the Copenhagen Climate Change
Conference in 2009.

The President claims that his policies are intended to prevent catastrophic climate change.  How can
the President of the United States promise to fundamentally transform America and redistribute
American wealth based on a subject about which he is totally ignorant?  He knows nothing about the
dynamics of climate change.  His words are paraphrased from Al Gore's books and movies.  It is
obvious that Gore knows nothing about the atmosphere-ocean dynamic system, the basis for climate
change.  Yet for thirty years he has been brainwashing Americans to believe that fossil fuels are evil
and should be placed under global governance.  He scares our children and the gullible with horror
stories claiming that  Earth's surface temperature is at the mercy of man made greenhouse gases
(GHG).  He expanded on this fallacy in his book, "Earth in the Balance:"

"As the oceans get warmer storms get stronger." (80)

"Global warming is linked to a significant increase in duration and intensity of hurricanes.
(81)

"…the skeptics argue that some feature of the global climate system may serve as a kind of
thermostat to regulate temperatures and keep them within the narrow range we are used to-
in spite of our apparent willingness to allow the blanket of greenhouse gases to thicken"
(89).

"…I think this vain hope for a magic thermostat goes back to an unwillingness to recognize
the new relationship between humankind and the earth, in which we really can now affect
the entire global environment.  And thus far, the search for a powerful enough thermostat
has proved to be fruitless" (90).

"...the global atmosphere ...is a single giant reservoir of air that is constantly and thoroughly
stirred into an homogeneous mixture..." (107).

Gore's statements are completely at odds with the real atmosphere-ocean system.  He confuses
Earth's atmosphere with artificial atmospheres calculated in climate change models.  For example,
warm water is a necessary condition for strong storms.  It is not a sufficient condition on Earth.  As
sea surface temperatures became warmer, during the past five years, hurricanes became weaker.  In
this appendix, we shall observe differences between models and real climate.

Weather systems (cyclones, anticyclones, fronts, monsoons, clouds, etc.) and ocean currents are the
magic thermostats that Gore failed to find.  These magic thermostats have been regulating Earth's
temperature, within the narrow range required to sustain life, for at least the last 500 million years.
During much of that period, GHG concentrations in the atmosphere were much higher than today.

Earth's magic thermostats transfer heat to cooler regions and cold to warmer regions by responding
to temperature contrasts.  Gore is confused because climate change computer models must average
or smooth out these magic thermostats.  This is because the atmosphere-ocean dynamic system is
non-linear.  Magic thermostats appear and disappear in a few days.  Their evolution is difficult to
predict.  But they are responsible for extreme weather events and climate change.  Climate change
models that replace magic thermostats with a homogeneous blanket of heat-trapping gases and
assume that extreme weather events derive only from increasing surface temperature are
speculative.  Al Gore has been misinformed.

In this chapter we shall observe the view from space, of magic thermostats exercising control over
weather extremes and climate change. NOAA/NASA imagery and cloud motion winds capture the
magic thermostats in action:

A. THE HEAT WAVE OF JULY 2010 REVISITED:

1.  With the East Coast heat wave approaching maximum temperatures, a  special magic thermostat, a cold low
(high altitude cyclone) appeared about 600 miles east of Cape Hatteras.(
C )

A cold front was three days away from lowering record high temperatures along the Coast.  The offshore cold
low backed up rapidly.  It came to a screeching halt just offshore of Cape Hatteras and extended cyclonic
winds to the surface.  In this location it was positioned perfectly to direct winds onshore to cool down record
East Coast temperatures.   As a result the heat wave was arrested before the cold front arrived.
Temperatures would likely have remained at record highs if the cold low had not come to the rescue.  This
inexplicable non-linear climate changing event can be described as the work of a powerful magic thermostat.

:
Tropical Storm Colin is approaching the Lesser Antilles on 4 August, 2010. A cold low is escorting Colin in
advance of its path.

The top panel shows the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). south of Hawaii.  Normally it is unbroken
during the summer.  The breaks are under cold lows aloft over the Equator.  Cold air from the winter
hemisphere has moved into the Northern Hemisphere.

Cold air at high altitude in the Tropics is suppressing hurricane development and convection on the ITCZ.  Both
of these processes are causing Tropical sea surface temperatures to increase.  This contributes to higher
global average surface temperature.  It is much more likely to cause global warming than burning fossil fuels.

Summary:

We observed high altitude cold air extinguish record high temperatures in major cities along the East Coast.
Three days later a cold front finished the job for the entire region.  We also observed cold air at high altitude
suppress hurricane development on five tropical disturbances.  Magic thermostats in the form of cold lows,
tropical cyclones and a cold front regulated temperatures.  Al Gore's failed search for magic thermostats that
regulate temperature is testimony to his total ignorance of atmosphere-ocean dynamics.

Gore's failure to find magic thermostats is a result of his exposure to climate change computer models that
assume a single reservoir homogeneous atmosphere with no magic thermostats in model initial conditions.
Also these models assume that extreme weather events are the result of man thickening a blanket of
heat-trapping gases that increases surface temperature.  And that this man-made global warming then causes
more and stronger storms.  Gore is not alone in his inability to distinguish between model and earth dynamics.

The AP release cited earlier included:
"The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) pointed out that this summer's events fit the
international scientists projections of "more frequent and more intense extreme weather events
due to global warming."

Eyes in the sky don't lie.  International scientists failed to view this summer's events from space. The heat wave
of July 2010 (A1) and the suppression of hurricane development in the Atlantic Ocean basin had nothing to do
with global warming.  Man made global warming is a fabrication of computer climate models.
.

3. Finally the cold front exercised its magic thermostat function as it moved offshore.  It cooled down the entire
East Coast three days after the cold low extinguished record high temperatures in New York City and other
coastal cities.  The cold front swept up, and was accelerated eastward by, the cold low now located over Maine

B.  HURRICANE ALEX AND TROPICAL DEPRESSION TWO:

Hurricane Alex and Tropical Depression Two, the first tropical cyclones of the 2010 season, provide evidence
of the thermostatic control of weather and oceans.  Both moved along the same track in the Gulf of Mexico.
Both moved over high sea surface temperatures.  Yet one became a Category Two hurricane, with more than
100 mph maximum winds while the other barely became a Tropical Depression with 35 mph maximum winds.
The most significant difference between the two was a cold low that formed ahead of TD2.  A cold low spins
counter-clockwise.  It prevents tropical cyclones from exhausting heat toward the west.  This is like closing the
flue in a chimney.  It suppresses storm energy.  Cold lows also create strong thermal winds above the interface
between cold and warm air.  These winds tend to topple tropical cyclones that get too close.

1.  HURRICANE ALEX:

Before becoming a hurricane, Alex built up a huge dome of warm air from the Pacific Ocean to Cuba.  Extension
of this warm air dome ahead of the storm is characteristic of an intensifying system.  This feature of a
developing tropical cyclone will be contrasted with later storms that move under cold air at high altitude.

2.  TROPICAL DEPRESSION 2::
C

1.  Tropical Depression Bonnie is moving west approaching the Bahamas.  Cold air ahead is evidenced by a
large cold low hovering northwest of Bonnie.
1. Eight days behind Alex, a tropical disturbance that will become TD2, moved over the Yucatan Peninsula on
nearly the same path.
W
W
ALEX
Tropical Cyclone Alex is moving northwest over the Yucatan Peninsula.  Alex became a hurricane soon after in
the western Gulf of Mexico.
ALEX
2.  Unlike Hurricane Alex, the tropical disturbance (TD2) over the Yucatan Peninsula has no high altitude warm
air extension ahead of its path.  Instead it is moving into cold air.  The temperature contrast between the
oncoming tropical disturbance and cold air causes the cold air to spin counter-clockwise as a cold low.  It will
prevent TD2 from becoming a hurricane even though it is passing over the same high temperature waters that
supported development of Hurricane Alex.  TD2 with maximum wind speeds of 35 mph made landfall in Mexico
at almost the same location as Alex.

3.  TROPICAL STORM BONNIE:
BONNIE
C

Tropical Storm Colin moved into the vicinity of a cold low on August 2.  The cold low remained ahead of Colin
until the storm began to recurve toward Bermuda four days later.  At that time a new cold low appeared
northeast of Colin.  With cold lows west and northeast, Colin could not intensify, although water temperatures
were high.  Two days later Colin passed close to Bermuda as a remnant low.  The cold lows were powerful
magic thermostats.

Following behind Colin is a disturbance that is given a greater than 50% probability of becoming a tropical
cyclone.  A cold low has formed ahead of this system preventing it from intensifying.  Five days later a cold front
wiped out this and two additional disturbances.  The cold low and front were powerful magic thermostats.

The cold low west of Colin moved over Florida and into the Gulf.  Tropical Depression Five formed under the
cold low.  The BP oil spill clean up was interrupted but it soon became evident that TD5 would not intensify due
to cold air aloft.  This cold low was a powerful magic thermostat.

5.HURRICANE DANIELLE:
Hurricane Danielle is moving northwest toward a cold front.  Warm air aloft ahead of the front and extremely
warm sea surface temperature has influenced Danielle to intensify to a strong Category Three hurricane.
Danielle is slipping past its escorting cold low.  Steering flows for cold lows and hurricanes diverge as the
hurricane recurves.
TD2
DANIELLE
C
Hurricane Danielle became the first major hurricane of the 2010 season.  This defies climate change model
projections.  There have been fifteen tropical disturbances in the Atlantic Ocean Basin this year.  With sea
surface temperatures unusually high, climate change models would have projected most disturbances to
become hurricanes.  Climate change models predicted 8-14 hurricanes and 6 major storms (Category 3 or
higher).
